Chinook Salmon: Also known as King Salmon, these bad boys are the heavyweights of the Pacific salmon world. We're talking fish that can top 30 pounds or more! Chinooks are known for their hard-fighting spirit and rich, flavorful meat. They're typically most active in these waters from late spring through early fall. When a big Chinook hits your line, hang on tight – these fish will test your arms and your drag system. There's a reason they call 'em "Kings" – landing one of these beauties is an accomplishment any angler can be proud of.
Coho Salmon: Don't let their smaller size fool you – Coho, or Silver Salmon, are pound-for-pound some of the most acrobatic fish you'll ever tangle with. These high-flying speedsters are known for their spectacular leaps and blistering runs. Cohos typically show up in good numbers from mid-summer through fall. They average 6-12 pounds, but don't be surprised if you hook into a 15+ pounder. Cohos are aggressive feeders and will often hit lures with reckless abandon, making for some exciting topwater action when conditions are right. Their bright silver sides and blue-green backs make for some stunning photos, and their meat is prized for its delicate flavor.
Look, I could go on all day about the killer salmon fishing we've got here off Vancouver Island, but why not come experience it for yourself? Wayne's calendar fills up fast, especially during peak season, so don't wait to lock in your date. Whether you're looking to fill the freezer with some prime salmon fillets or just want to experience the thrill of battling these amazing fish, a day out with Full Melt Charters is hard to beat. Bring your camera, your sense of adventure, and maybe a couple of cold ones for the ride back to the dock. Trust me, once you've fished these waters with Wayne, you'll be itching to come back for more. So what are you waiting for? Let's get you out on the water and into some fish!

Chinook salmon, also called Kings, are the heavyweights of the Pacific salmon world. These brutes can top 30 pounds, with some monsters pushing 50 or more. You'll find them hugging the bottom in deeper water, often around structure or drop-offs. Kings put up a serious fight - be ready for long runs and some serious pulling. Their rich, orange-red meat is prized for its flavor. Late summer to early fall is prime time for Chinooks around Vancouver Island. We target them by trolling with downriggers, using cut-plug herring or large spoons. Here's a local tip: when you hook up, don't horse them in. Take your time and let the fish tire itself out. Nothing worse than losing a trophy King at the boat because you rushed it.
Coho salmon, or silvers, are the acrobats of the salmon family. These fish average 8-12 pounds but can surprise you with their strength. You'll often spot them finning near the surface in calmer waters, especially around river mouths and estuaries. Cohos are known for their spectacular aerial displays when hooked - be ready for some serious action. Their meat is a bit milder than Chinook, but still delicious. We usually see the best Coho fishing from late summer through fall. These fish respond well to trolled flies or small spoons near the surface. If you're looking for a fun fight on lighter tackle, Cohos are hard to beat. One trick I've found: vary your trolling speed. Sometimes a quick burst followed by a pause can trigger a strike from a following fish.
