Picture this: You're cruising along Vancouver Island's rugged coastline, downriggers set, and lines in the water. The anticipation builds as Wayne navigates to his favorite honey holes. These waters are teeming with salmon, and it's only a matter of time before you feel that heart-pounding strike. Wayne's boat is perfectly rigged for salmon trolling, with all the gear you need to land the big one. As you wait for the bite, soak in those postcard-worthy views of the island. If you're new to salmon trolling, you're in for a treat. We'll be using downriggers to get our lures down to where the fish are hanging out. Wayne's got a knack for reading the water and finding those sweet spots where salmon like to cruise. He'll set you up with the right gear - usually a combo of flashers and hoochies or spoons that drive salmon crazy. Keep an eye on those rod tips - when they start bouncing, it's game on! Wayne's always happy to share his tips and techniques, so don't be shy about picking his brain. By the end of the day, you'll be talking about "depth", "speed", and "bait balls" like a pro.

On this trip, we're zeroing in on two prized salmon species: Chinook and Coho. Let's break 'em down:
Chinook Salmon, also known as King Salmon, are the heavyweights of the Pacific. These bruisers can tip the scales at over 30 pounds, with some monsters pushing 50+. They're known for their hard-fighting spirit and rich, flavorful meat. Chinooks are typically in our waters from late spring through fall, with peak season usually hitting in July and August. When a Chinook decides to take your lure, hold on tight - these fish will put your arms and your gear to the test!
Coho Salmon, or Silver Salmon, might be smaller than Chinooks, but what they lack in size, they make up for in acrobatics. These high-flyers are famous for their spectacular leaps and blistering runs. Averaging 7-11 pounds, Cohos are no pushovers. They start showing up in good numbers from July through September. Pound for pound, many anglers consider Coho the most exciting salmon to catch. Plus, their orange-red flesh is absolutely delicious - perfect for the grill or smoker.
Both these species are not just fun to catch, but they're also vital to the local ecosystem and economy. Fishing for them responsibly helps support conservation efforts and keeps these waters productive for generations to come.
Let me tell you, there's something special about fishing these waters that keeps folks coming back year after year. Maybe it's the rush of battling a chrome-bright salmon as it peels line off your reel. Or perhaps it's the jaw-dropping scenery - snow-capped mountains in the distance, eagles soaring overhead, and if you're lucky, maybe even a pod of orcas cruising by. But I think what really seals the deal is the whole package: top-notch fishing, stunning natural beauty, and the kind of hospitality that makes you feel like family.
Wayne's not just a guide; he's a local legend with years of experience under his belt. He knows where the fish are biting and how to put you on them. But more than that, he's got a way of making everyone feel comfortable and confident on the water. Whether you're a seasoned pro or it's your first time holding a rod, Wayne's got you covered.
And let's not forget about the memories you'll make. There's nothing quite like the shared excitement of a big catch, or swapping stories over a cold drink at the end of the day. Many of our guests tell us their fishing trip was the highlight of their Vancouver Island visit - and that's saying something in a place with so much to offer!
Alright, folks, if you're itching to get out on the water and tangle with some hard-fighting salmon, it's time to lock in your spot. Whether you're looking for a half-day adventure or want to make a full day of it, Wayne's got you covered. Remember, the boat can take up to three anglers, so it's perfect for a small group or family outing.
Don't forget to grab your fishing license before you arrive - Wayne can point you in the right direction if you need help with that. And while meals aren't included, you're welcome to bring along some snacks and drinks to keep your energy up while you're reeling in the big ones.
So what are you waiting for? The salmon are out there, and they're not going to catch themselves! Book your trip with Full Melt Charters today and get ready for some of the best fishing Vancouver Island has to offer. Trust me, once you've experienced the thrill of battling a Pacific salmon in these pristine waters, you'll be hooked for life. See you on the water!

Chinook, or King salmon, are the biggest prize in our waters. These bruisers can top 30 pounds, with most catches in the 15-25 pound range. They're deep swimmers, so we'll be dropping lines way down. Spring and fall are prime Chinook seasons here. Anglers love 'em for the powerful fight and rich, orange-red meat - some of the best eating fish you'll ever taste. Look for them around underwater structure and deep holes. They're not called Kings for nothing - when one hits, you'll know it. My pro tip: use big, flashy spoons or cut-plug herring to attract their attention in the depths. Patience is key with Chinooks. We might spend more time searching, but when that rod doubles over, it's all worth it. Nothing beats the rush of battling one of these giants to the boat.

Coho, or silvers, are the acrobats of the salmon world. Typically 8-12 pounds, these feisty fish put on a real show when hooked. They're surface feeders, so we'll be working the top 30 feet of water. Late summer and early fall is prime Coho time around here. Anglers can't get enough of their aerial displays - these fish will leap clear out of the water trying to throw the hook. You'll find them cruising nearshore waters and around kelp beds. Their meat is a bit milder than Chinook, but still makes for excellent grilling or smoking. If you see jumpers, that's a good sign Cohos are around. My go-to trick is trolling with a flashy hoochie skirt about 15 feet down. These curious fish can't resist investigating, and once they commit, hold on tight!
